Make (formerly known as Integromat) is the automation platform that Zapier users graduate to when their workflows become more complex. Where Zapier is built around simple two-step rules, Make is a visual canvas where you can build sophisticated multi-step workflows with branching logic, data transformation, and conditional paths.

How it differs from Zapier

Zapier is excellent for simple automations: when this happens, do that. Make is for when "this" and "that" involve multiple steps, conditions, and data manipulation.

In Make, you build your workflow visually on a canvas. You can see exactly how data flows from one step to the next. You can add conditions (if the deal value is over £10,000, send to the senior team; otherwise handle normally). You can transform data along the way. You can handle errors and edge cases.

When to choose Make over Zapier

Choose Zapier when: You have straightforward automations (new form submission sends an email, new booking creates a calendar event) and want to get started quickly with a beginner-friendly interface.

Choose Make when: Your workflows have multiple steps, conditional logic, or need to manipulate data before passing it to the next app. When you want more control over exactly what happens. When you want to pay less (Make's pricing is more generous).

The pricing advantage

Make's free tier is more generous than Zapier's, and its paid plans start at £9/month versus Zapier's £16/month. For businesses running multiple complex automations, Make often works out significantly cheaper.

Getting started

Go to make.com and create a free account. Build your first scenario (Make's word for a workflow) using the visual canvas. Start with something simple to get familiar with the interface, then build up to more complex automations.

Make has a steeper learning curve than Zapier but rewards the investment with more power and flexibility.

How to get set up

  1. Go to make.com and click Get Started Free
  2. Create an account with your email
  3. Click Create a new scenario. You will see a visual canvas where you connect apps together.
  4. Click the plus icon, search for your first app (for example, Gmail), and choose a trigger (for example, "new email received")
  5. Add a second app and choose what should happen, then click Run once to test it

Time to get started: 15 to 20 minutes for your first automation Do you need a credit card? No — free tier available
