What is Google AI Studio?

Google AI Studio is Google's platform for building with AI. It started as a playground for experimenting with Gemini models, but it has grown into something more significant. It now includes Antigravity, Google's answer to the vibe coding wave: a tool that generates production-ready web apps from a plain text description.

If you have been watching tools like Bolt and Lovable and wondering when Google would enter the space, this is it.

Antigravity: the part that matters

Antigravity is the app-building feature inside Google AI Studio. You describe what you want to build, and it generates a working web application. Not a mock-up, not a template. A real app with authentication, databases, and integrations built in.

This puts it in direct competition with Bolt, Lovable, and, at the more technical end, Claude Code. The fact that it is free changes the maths considerably.

How it compares

Versus Bolt. Bolt is faster to get started and excellent for simple websites and landing pages. If you need something up in 10 minutes, Bolt is still the quickest path. Antigravity is more capable when you need actual application logic: user accounts, data storage, connected services. It takes a few more minutes but produces something more powerful.

Versus Claude Code. Claude Code is a developer tool. It runs in your terminal and assumes you are comfortable with code. Antigravity is built for people who are not developers. You describe what you want in plain English and the tool handles everything. Claude Code gives you more control; Antigravity gives you more accessibility.

Who should use it

Google AI Studio with Antigravity is particularly well suited to business owners who have outgrown simple website builders but do not want to hire a developer. If you need a custom quoting tool, a client portal, a booking system with user accounts, or an internal dashboard, this is worth trying before you reach for your wallet.

It is also a strong choice if you are already in the Google ecosystem. It connects naturally with Google services, and signing in with your existing Google account means no new accounts to manage.

The fact that it is free removes the usual cost barrier for experimentation. You can try three or four different approaches and throw away the ones that don't work without spending anything.

What it's good for

Custom business tools. If the thing you need doesn't exist as an off-the-shelf product, or the off-the-shelf options are too expensive or too complicated, describing it to Antigravity is a sensible first step.

Prototyping. Build a working version of an idea quickly to test whether it actually solves the problem before investing in a more polished product.

Apps that need user accounts. Bolt is excellent for static sites and simple tools. If you need multiple users to log in and see their own data, Antigravity handles that more naturally.

Anything in the Google ecosystem. If you want something that connects to Google Sheets, Google Calendar, or Google Drive, you are in the right place.

How to get set up

  1. Go to aistudio.google.com and sign in with your Google account.
  2. Look for the Create App option or navigate to Antigravity.
  3. Describe what you want to build. Be specific: what it does, who uses it, what data it needs to handle.
  4. Review the result, iterate by describing what you want to change.

Time to get started: Under 5 minutes Do you need a credit card? No, it is free.
