Adobe Firefly answers a question that matters increasingly for businesses: if I use AI to generate images for commercial work, do I have any legal risk?

With Midjourney, DALL-E, and many other generators, the answer is not entirely clear. The models were trained on internet images, and the rights situation remains legally contested.

Adobe Firefly was trained exclusively on licensed stock imagery, content from Adobe Stock, and public domain content. The commercial rights are clean. Adobe backs this with an indemnification promise: if you face a legal claim over Firefly-generated content used commercially, Adobe will defend it.

Where Firefly lives

Firefly is not just a standalone tool at firefly.adobe.com. It is embedded throughout Adobe Creative Cloud.

Photoshop: The Generative Fill feature uses Firefly to extend images, fill in backgrounds, add or remove objects, and replace skies. You select an area and describe what you want. Photoshop generates it seamlessly.

Illustrator: Generate vector graphics and patterns from text descriptions. Convert rough sketches to polished illustrations.

Adobe Express: The simplified design tool includes Firefly for non-designers who want AI image generation without the complexity of Photoshop.

Practical applications

For businesses already using Creative Cloud, Firefly slots naturally into existing workflows. A marketer editing a product photo in Photoshop can use Generative Fill to extend the background for a different aspect ratio, remove an unwanted element, or swap a background entirely, without leaving the app.

For businesses that are not currently Adobe users, the standalone Firefly web app offers a capable image generator with a clean interface. The generation quality is good, if not quite at Midjourney's level for pure artistic output.

The honest comparison

Midjourney produces more artistically impressive results. Ideogram handles text better. DALL-E integrates with ChatGPT conveniently.

Firefly's advantage is commercial safety and Creative Cloud integration. If you are already paying for Adobe and you need commercially safe AI images, Firefly is the obvious choice.

Pricing

Adobe Creative Cloud: Firefly credits are included in all Creative Cloud plans. The exact credit allowance depends on your plan tier. Standalone Firefly: Free tier available with limited monthly credits. Paid plans from $4.99/month for additional credits.
