UK SME Workers Saving 5.2 Hours a Week with AI — But Many Businesses Are Being Left Behind

New research shows AI is already saving UK small business workers over five hours each week, but adoption remains patchy — and the gap between businesses using AI and those that aren't is widening fast.

UK small business workers who use AI tools are saving an average of 5.2 hours per week, according to new research — roughly the equivalent of a full working day every fortnight.

But the headline figure masks a growing divide. While some businesses have integrated AI into their day-to-day operations and are seeing real productivity gains, many others haven't started at all. The businesses struggling most tend to be those without a clear starting point or internal champion to drive adoption.

A separate report from TC Group confirms the picture: real AI adoption in UK SMEs was modest in 2025, but 2026 looks different. The volume of practical tools, the falling cost of AI access, and clearer return-on-investment are pushing more businesses over the line.

Where the 5.2 hours is being saved: Common time savings come from email drafting, summarising documents, answering customer queries, building quotes and proposals, and doing research that used to take hours manually.

What to do: If you haven't started yet, start small. Pick one task you do every week that feels repetitive or slow. Try an AI tool on that task for one month. The businesses saving 5 hours a week all started with one task.
