What Happened

Microsoft has pushed a significant update to Copilot, its AI assistant built into Microsoft 365. The new version can now act as an autonomous agent, meaning it can carry out sequences of tasks on your behalf rather than just answering single questions. Examples include automatically organising your inbox by priority, updating a project tracker in Excel based on information from emails, and drafting weekly reports by pulling data from multiple files.

The Shift from Assistant to Agent

This is an important distinction for business owners to understand. An AI assistant responds when you ask it something. An AI agent can be given a goal and then go and carry it out across multiple steps without you directing each one. This is a meaningfully different and more powerful capability.
