Microsoft Copilot Gains Autonomous Agent Capabilities for Business Users
Microsoft has updated Copilot with the ability to carry out multi-step tasks automatically inside Office apps, moving beyond answering questions to actually completing workflows.
What Happened
Microsoft has pushed a significant update to Copilot, its AI assistant built into Microsoft 365. The new version can now act as an autonomous agent, meaning it can carry out sequences of tasks on your behalf rather than just answering single questions. Examples include automatically organising your inbox by priority, updating a project tracker in Excel based on information from emails, and drafting weekly reports by pulling data from multiple files.
The Shift from Assistant to Agent
This is an important distinction for business owners to understand. An AI assistant responds when you ask it something. An AI agent can be given a goal and then go and carry it out across multiple steps without you directing each one. This is a meaningfully different and more powerful capability.
For a small business, this could mean setting up Copilot to handle routine admin tasks automatically: logging customer enquiries, updating spreadsheets, or preparing briefing documents before meetings.
What You Need
The agent features are being rolled out to Microsoft 365 Copilot subscribers. This is a paid add-on on top of standard Microsoft 365 plans, currently priced at around 30 dollars per user per month. For teams that spend significant time on repetitive admin, the maths can work out quickly.
Things to Watch
Autonomous agents acting inside your business systems carry real risk if something goes wrong. Microsoft has built in approval steps for sensitive actions, but you should start with low-stakes workflows and monitor outputs carefully before letting agents handle anything critical.
What to Do
If you are already a Copilot subscriber, look for the new Agents section in the Copilot interface. If you are not, request a trial and test it against one specific admin task that takes your team regular time each week.
