Microsoft Copilot Gets Autonomous Agent Mode for Business Tasks
Microsoft has begun rolling out an autonomous agent capability inside Copilot that can complete multi-step business tasks independently, marking a significant shift in how the tool operates.
What Happened
Microsoft has started rolling out an agent mode for Microsoft Copilot across its Microsoft 365 suite. Unlike the current version of Copilot, which responds to individual prompts, the new agent mode can be given a goal and will independently plan and carry out the steps needed to complete it, working across apps like Outlook, Excel, Teams, and SharePoint.
What This Looks Like in Practice
As an example, you could instruct Copilot to gather responses from a recent customer survey, summarise the key themes, create a slide deck with the findings, and send it to your management team before Friday. The agent would handle each of those steps without you needing to prompt it through every stage.
This moves Copilot from being a tool you actively use to something closer to a digital assistant that can operate in the background on longer tasks.
Why This Is a Big Deal
For business owners and managers, this kind of automation has the potential to free up significant time on routine but time-consuming tasks. Report preparation, data gathering, scheduling, and internal communications are all areas where an agent working across Microsoft's apps could have immediate impact.
The key difference from simple automation tools is that Copilot can handle tasks that require judgement and variation, not just fixed rules.
Things to Consider
Before deploying agent capabilities broadly, businesses should think carefully about data access permissions. An agent that can act across your systems will need appropriate guardrails to avoid accessing sensitive information unintentionally. Microsoft includes permission controls, but reviewing them carefully before use is advisable. The feature is rolling out gradually to Microsoft 365 Business and Enterprise subscribers.
