Microsoft Copilot Gets Deep Integration With Excel and Outlook for SMBs
Microsoft has expanded Copilot AI features across Excel and Outlook for Microsoft 365 Business subscribers, bringing practical automation tools to small and medium business users.
What Happened
Microsoft has rolled out expanded Copilot AI features to Microsoft 365 Business Basic and Business Standard subscribers. The update brings meaningful AI assistance directly into Excel and Outlook, two tools that most small business owners and their teams use every day.
In Excel, Copilot can now build formulas, create charts, summarise data, and highlight patterns without the user needing any technical knowledge. In Outlook, it can draft replies, summarise long email threads, and suggest follow-up actions.
Why It Matters
For a long time, Copilot was mainly available on higher-tier Microsoft plans, putting it out of reach for many smaller businesses. Bringing these features to Business Basic and Standard plans means millions more users now have access to practical AI tools inside software they are already paying for.
This is exactly the kind of AI adoption that does not require any new tools, new subscriptions, or technical setup. If your team already uses Microsoft 365, these features may already be available or arriving soon through an automatic update.
Practical Uses To Try
For Excel users, the most immediately useful feature is asking Copilot to explain what a formula does or to build one for you. This alone can save hours for people who are not comfortable with spreadsheets.
For Outlook, the email summary feature is genuinely useful if you deal with long chains of back-and-forth messages. Rather than reading every reply, you can get a quick summary of where things stand.
To check if Copilot is available in your Microsoft 365 account, look for the Copilot icon in the top ribbon of Excel or Outlook. If it is not there yet, Microsoft is rolling this out gradually and it should appear within the coming weeks.
