Microsoft Copilot Gets Deep Integration With Excel and Word for SMBs

Microsoft has announced a set of new Copilot features inside Excel and Word that are now available to Microsoft 365 Business Basic, Standard, and Premium subscribers. Previously, many advanced Copilot features required the separate Copilot add-on licence at an extra cost per user per month.

New Excel features include automatic data summarisation, anomaly detection in spreadsheets, and the ability to ask plain language questions about your data. In Word, Copilot can now draft documents from bullet points, rewrite sections in different tones, and pull in data from connected Excel files.

This is a practical and immediate win for small business owners. If you already pay for Microsoft 365, you may now have access to AI features you were not aware of or had previously been locked out of. The Excel improvements in particular are useful for anyone who spends time analysing sales data, budgets, or inventory without a dedicated data analyst on the team.

What You Should Do

Log into your Microsoft 365 account and check whether the Copilot features are now visible in your Excel and Word toolbars. Availability is rolling out gradually, so if you do not see them yet, check back within the next two to three weeks.

A good first test in Excel is to open a spreadsheet with sales or financial data and ask Copilot to summarise the key trends. In Word, try pasting a list of bullet points and asking it to draft a short report. Both tasks take under two minutes and will give you a clear sense of the value on offer.
