EU AI Act Compliance Deadlines Are Now in Force for High-Risk Systems
Key EU AI Act obligations for high-risk AI systems came into force this month, meaning businesses operating in Europe must now meet strict transparency and documentation requirements.
What Happened
The European Union AI Act has now reached a critical implementation milestone. Obligations for providers and deployers of high-risk AI systems are now formally in effect across EU member states. This covers AI used in areas such as recruitment, credit scoring, education assessment, and certain customer-facing automated decision-making tools.
Businesses that have not yet completed their compliance work are now technically in breach of EU law if they operate these systems without the required documentation, human oversight mechanisms, and transparency measures in place.
Why It Matters
If you sell products or services to customers in the EU, or if your business is based in Europe, this directly affects you. The rules are not just for large technology companies. Any business using AI in a way that could significantly affect a person's access to services, employment, or credit is covered.
Fines for non-compliance can reach up to 30 million euros or 6 percent of global annual turnover, whichever is higher. Regulators across member states are beginning to establish enforcement units.
For founders building AI products intended for European markets, the requirements mean you need clear records of how your AI systems work, what data they were trained on, and how humans can intervene when the system makes a decision.
What to Do About It
The first step is to identify whether any AI tools you use or sell fall into the high-risk category under the Act. The European Commission has published guidance and a classification tool to help with this.
If you are affected, you will need a risk management system, technical documentation, and a way for users to understand when an AI system is making decisions about them.
Speak to a lawyer with EU regulatory experience if you are unsure about your obligations. Acting now is far cheaper than dealing with an enforcement action later.
