What happened

OpenAI has released GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5.4 nano, two smaller, faster, and cheaper versions of its flagship GPT-5.4 model.

GPT-5.4 mini is described as more than twice as fast as its predecessor while approaching the performance of the full GPT-5.4 model on several benchmarks, including coding and reasoning tasks. GPT-5.4 nano is the smallest and cheapest option, designed for high-volume tasks where speed matters more than raw capability, such as classification, data extraction, and running background sub-tasks in AI workflows.

Both models are available via the OpenAI API today. OpenAI says they are built specifically for the kinds of applications where latency directly shapes the user experience: coding assistants, AI agents, and tools that need to reason over images in real time.

Early customers testing the models in production workflows report strong performance at significantly lower cost per task.

What this means for your business

Until now, running sophisticated AI workflows at scale was expensive. Every query to a large model adds up, and for businesses processing hundreds or thousands of tasks a day, the costs could quickly become a blocker.

GPT-5.4 mini and nano change that equation. These models are purpose-built for the background work that powers AI agents: the constant tool calls, data lookups, and sub-tasks that make an agent actually useful. Cheaper per call means more calls become economically viable.

In practical terms, this means more businesses can now afford to run AI agents continuously, not just for occasional one-off tasks. If you have been experimenting with AI automations but found the costs awkward to justify, these models are worth revisiting.

For developers and technical founders, GPT-5.4 mini in particular looks like a strong default for production workloads where the full model is overkill. For everyone else, expect the tools you already use, from customer support chatbots to AI writing assistants, to get noticeably faster and cheaper to run behind the scenes.
