Google Brings Gemini AI Directly Into Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive
Google has rolled out new Gemini features across its Workspace apps, letting users draft documents, build spreadsheets and design presentations using their own files and emails as context.
What happened
Google has pushed a substantial update to Gemini across Google Workspace, embedding the AI more deeply into Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drive. The new features let Gemini pull context from your existing files, emails and the web to help you produce work faster.
In Docs, you can describe what you want and Gemini will create a first draft that draws on relevant files you already have. In Sheets, it can build out spreadsheets, formulas and data analysis from a plain English description. In Slides, it can design presentations based on your content. Drive now includes smarter search that surfaces relevant information from across your files and inbox at the same time.
The update is rolling out to Google AI Ultra and Pro subscribers. Google AI Ultra costs around $250 a month for individuals; Pro sits at a lower tier. Most business teams on Google Workspace will need to check their plan to see what they can access immediately.
What this means for your business
If your team already runs on Google Workspace, this is worth checking today. The ability to tell Gemini to "write a proposal using last quarter's results from my Drive and the brief in this email thread" and get a working first draft is a meaningful time saving for any small business owner who spends hours on documents, presentations and reports.
The catch is the subscription tier. These features are currently limited to AI Ultra and Pro subscribers, not standard Workspace business plans. If your team is on a basic tier, you will not see these features yet, but they are likely to roll down to more plans over time.
For anyone evaluating whether to stay with Google Workspace or switch to Microsoft 365 and Copilot, this update closes the gap. Both platforms now offer deep AI integration across their core productivity tools.
