Claude Now Reads a Million Tokens at No Extra Cost
Anthropic has made its 1 million token context window generally available for Claude Opus 4.6 and Sonnet 4.6 -- with no long-context price premium.
What happened
Anthropic announced on 13 March 2026 that the 1 million token context window is now generally available for Claude Opus 4.6 and Claude Sonnet 4.6. Access is included for all Max, Team, and Enterprise plan users -- both in the Claude web app and within Claude Code.
The pricing change is significant: there is no long-context premium. A 900,000-token request costs the same per token as a 9,000-token one. Pricing remains at $5 per million input / $25 per million output tokens for Opus, and $3 / $15 for Sonnet. Media support has also expanded to 600 images or PDF pages per request.
To put that in perspective: 1 million tokens is roughly 750,000 words -- the equivalent of 10 full-length novels, or a year's worth of business emails.
What this means for your business
This is a practical unlock for businesses dealing with large volumes of documents.
Before: You had to chunk documents, lose context between chunks, or pay a premium for longer windows.
Now: You can feed an entire contract library, a full year of customer support transcripts, or a large codebase into a single Claude session and ask questions across all of it at once.
Concrete use cases:
- Legal and compliance: Review entire contracts or policy libraries in one go
- Finance: Analyse full annual reports or multi-year transaction histories
- Customer support: Train Claude on your complete knowledge base without trimming
- Research: Summarise large collections of documents without losing thread
The removal of the pricing premium is the real story here. Long-context AI stopped being expensive overnight.
